Sun Smart Starts Here

Learn how to protect your skin every day with easy habits that keep it comfortable, confident, and ready for fun.

Why Sun Protection Matters

Sun time is fun, but your skin still needs backup. The sun gives us light, warmth, and helps our bodies make vitamin D, but too much exposure can stress your skin and cause damage over time. Protecting your skin now helps keep it healthy for years to come.

Think of sun care like hydration or cleansing. It is part of a smart daily routine.

Sun protection helps:

  • Prevent sunburn
  • Support your skin barrier
  • Lower the risk of long term damage
  • Keep skin comfortable

Fun Fact:

Did you know that your skin remembers every sunburn you get? That's why it's super important to protect your skin from an early age!

Understanding UV Rays

The sun sends invisible rays called ultraviolet or UV rays. Two main types affect your skin.

  • UVA rays can cause early signs of aging (that means wrinkles) and damage over time.
  • UVB rays are the main cause of sunburn.

Both can harm your skin, which is why daily protection matters even when it is cloudy.

Check the UV Index:

The UV Index tells you how strong the sun’s rays are. The higher the number, the more important sun protection becomes.

Your Sun Smart Squad

A strong sun routine uses more than one move.

  • Sunscreen: Use SPF 30 or higher every day when you will be outside.
  • Hats: Wide brims help shade your face and neck.
  • Clothing: Long sleeves and pants add extra coverage when possible.
  • Sunglasses: Protect your eyes and the skin around them.
  • Shade: Take breaks from direct sun, especially between 10 am and 4 pm.

Clouds do not block all UV rays, so protection still matters on overcast days.

Sunscreen 101

Sunscreen is your everyday shield. Here is how to use it the right way.

  • Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before heading outside.
  • Use cream sunscreen first, then spray or powder for reapplication.
  • Use enough to cover exposed skin.
  • Face: About a nickel sized amount
  • Body: About a golf ball sized amount
  • Do not forget ears, feet, lips, and the back of your neck.
  • Reapply every two hours, or sooner if you swim or sweat.

What To Do If You Get Sunburned

If your skin gets too much sun, it is time to slow down and help it recover.

  • Get out of the sun right away.
  • Use cool compresses or take a cool bath.
  • Apply aloe or a soothing lotion.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Tell a grown up if the burn is painful or if you feel sick

Sunburns are not fun, but taking care of your skin helps it bounce back.

Sun Smart, All Day

You can still enjoy sunny days while being kind to your skin. When you protect it, you are setting yourself up for healthy skin now and later.

Sun care is not extra. It is just smart.
